New! Polly Pocket -

Jail Edition" (2019)

"New! Polly Pocket - Jail Edition" (2019) is a series that, through irony and symbolism, unravels the complex network of social conditioning leading to dynamics of repression and containment in El Salvador. Using the iconic '90s toy "Polly Pocket," with which the artist grew up, as a metaphor, the artwork sheds light on how certain educational and cultural structures predispose individuals to predetermined roles within the intricate industrial prison system.

These pieces, meticulously crafted through multiple stages, combine 3D printing techniques, automotive enamel, foam, polyurethane resin, fiberglass, and stainless steel accessories. The "Polly Pockets" not only present a childlike interpretation of life within prisons but also reveal a broader critique of how society shapes its citizens from an early age. Anticipating the recent nostalgic surge of "Barbie" in 2023, these scaled cells and confinement spaces illustrate how certain social "games," systematically instilled from childhood, can preconfigure dark destinies for many.

The artwork was acquired in 2019, and due to a myriad of unfavorable circumstances stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic, it didn't reach Miami until mid-2020. The delay only underscored its relevance: the conditions in Salvadoran prisons were no longer the same when the artwork finally arrived home. Given the recently tightened prison conditions in El Salvador, these pieces are now safeguarded in the renowned Addison Scholl collection, serving as a reminder of how changing circumstances can redefine and recontextualize art and its underlying meanings.
